Which architecture answers which grid
The choice is rarely about preference. It follows from one question: what happens to this site when the grid fails, and what does that failure cost.
| Architecture | Runs when the grid fails | Storage | Choose it when | What to accept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grid-tied (on-grid) | No, the system shuts down | Optional, sized to project | The grid is reliable and the aim is a cheaper kilowatt-hour | No protection against outages |
| Hybrid | Yes, on the backed-up circuits | Integral to the design | Outages are frequent, scheduled, or expensive in lost output | Battery cost, and you need a critical load list |
| Off-grid | Yes, the system is the supply | Essential | There is no grid connection | Sizing must cover the worst-case sun and load, not the average |
Most commercial sites in our export markets land on hybrid. A full off-grid design costs materially more for the same daytime load, which is why it is reserved for sites with no connection at all.
